Seachem Flourish Excel – Organic Carbon for the Planted Aquarium

Description:

Bioavailable organic carbon source for the planted aquarium
Use as an alternative to CO₂ injection or in addition to it
Introduces photosynthetic intermediates

Flourish Excel™ is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO₂, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). The use of either CO₂ injection or Flourish Excel™ does not necessarily negate the use of the other. Because the processes of producing photosynthetic intermediates and building onto them occur simultaneously, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel™ either alone or in conjunction with CO₂ . The combination is particularly ideal for situations when continuing to add CO₂ could result in dangerously low pH levels. Flourish Excel™ also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe⁺²), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe⁺³).

The reason plants need CO₂ is to produce longer chain carbon compounds also known as photosynthetic intermediates. Photosynthetic intermediates includes compounds such as ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, and 2-carboxy-3-keto-D-arabinitol 1,5 bisphosphate. Although the names are complicated, the structures are quite simple (5 carbon chains). Flourish Excel™ does not contain these specific compounds per se, but one that is quite similar. By dosing with Flourish Excel™ you bypass the involvement of CO₂ and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds. It is in its structural similarity that Flourish Excel™ is able to be utilized in the carbon chain building process of photosynthesis. Simple chemical or enzymatic steps can easily convert it to any one to any one of the above named compounds (or a variety of others).

Dosage Calculator:

On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL.

FAQ:

I have a AP Bio-Chem Zorb pouch in my filtration system. Will it scavenge the organic component of Flourish Excel™?

A: Chemical filtration medias will have a very minimal impact on Flourish Excel™ but not enough to warrant removing them from your filter when you dose this product.

Is it better to add Flourish Excel™ at night or in the morning based upon plant carbon uptake physiology?

A: Carbon intake is a function of photosynthesis. Based on this, it would be ideal to dose Flourish Excel™ during the day. But given that Flourish Excel™ can stay complexed as a carbon source for up to 24 hours before it dissipates, you can dose at any time of the day and the product will be available for the next 24 hours. Flourish Excel™ is not carbon dioxide and there is no impact on pH using it.

Is Flourish Excel™ a replacement for CO₂ in a planted aquarium?

A: Yes and no. It provides the same benefit as CO₂, i.e. it provides the plants with a source of carbon for growth just as CO₂ provides them with carbon. However CO₂ by itself will give you quantitatively more growth than Flourish Excel™ alone, although Flourish Excel™ does provide a substantial amount in comparison. If CO₂ is a 10, Flourish Excel™ is a 6-7. Using both together provides additional benefit. One of the advantages of the Flourish Excel™ is no up front equipment costs and complexity of valves, hoses and regulators, etc.

What effect would an airstone/agitation have on Excel’s effective CO₂ levels?

A: An air stone or other surface agitation will not impact the effectiveness of Flourish Excel.™ Flourish Excel™ is not CO₂, it is simply a readily available source of carbon. This is an intermediate source and more readily available than CO₂ and will not interfere with the uptake of CO₂ as a carbon source.

Is Flourish Excel™ okay to use with Anacharis?

A: Anacharis is a particularly sensitive species (known to be sensitive to high temperature, trace copper, formaldehyde etc.). It is also sensitive to Flourish Excel.™ If you have Anacharis in an aquarium in which you are dosing Flourish Excel™ we recommend using it every other day rather than daily.

Is Flourish Excel™ safe to use with marimo moss balls?

A: One side effect of using Flourish Excel™ that hobbyists have reported is that certain types of algae growth tend to lessen when Flourish Excel™ is dosed in an aquarium. Black beard algae seems to be particularly affected. Marimo moss balls aren’t actually moss, but are actually a type of algae. Because of this, many people have been concerned about using Flourish Excel™ with marimo balls, however, the majority of the feedback we have gotten is that Flourish Excel™ has no negative effect on marimo balls when used according to directions. Here is a link to a forum post where aquarists are discussing their experiences with Flourish Excel™ and marimo balls.

Because some people have observed reduced algae when using Excel, some people try to use it to treat unwanted algae. We do not produce or market it as an algicide and using it as spot treatment where it is overdosed or applied directly to a plant can cause damage.

With marimo balls or any sensitive plant you can begin with a small dose and increase slowly over time after observing for any negative reaction. If the moss balls are the only plants or the tank is sparsely populated, reduce the dose accordingly as they are low-light, slow growing plants and will not use as much carbon as other faster growing plants.

Will the Flourish Excel™ kill the Vallisneria or will they adapt over time as some people suggested?

We had received reports from several hobbyists who said that they had seen Vallisneria melt when Flourish Excel™ was used with them. We also had reports of them thriving with Excel. Because of this, we decided to do an experiment to test this in our lab. First we did a preliminary study with several val species (Amazon val, Italian val, corkscrew val, contortion val) with three tanks with different dosages: double dose, recommended dose, and a control with no Excel.

In that initial experiment, we did see some melting of leaves in the tank receiving the double dose, though the damage wasn’t extreme and new leaves grew in strongly to replace the lost vegetation. In the regularly dosed tank, we didn’t see any issues. This was a short term experiment just to see if we could see an effect and based on the results, we launched a more carefully controlled experiment where we tried to more carefully determine the best guidelines for using Flourish Excel™ with Vals.

We were able to make a few generalizations from our experiments and what we have heard from hobbyists:

1. Large doses of Flourish Excel™ can sometimes cause some melting of the leaves of Vallisneria. The larger the dose, the more likely there might be an issue.

2. The damage is temporary; the roots aren’t affected and it grows back strongly and tolerates future dosing of Flourish Excel™ even at higher than recommended doses.

3. Vallisneria normally tolerate the regular maintenance dose with no problem. In both experiments they weren’t affected by the daily dose, only higher doses.

4. When other nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, potassium) are dosed, Flourish Excel™ doses could be much higher without melting any leaves of the Vallisneria.

Is Flourish Excel™ safe for fish?

A: Yes, when used as directed, Flourish Excel™ is completely safe for fish.

Description:

Especially effective algae control for BBA, hair/string/fuzz and most forms of filamentous algae.
Gently biodegrades completely. It is an effective treatment algae control for cyanobacteria / BGA.
APT FIX contains a proprietary formulation of epoxy aldehydes. The aldehyde components are protein crosslinkers that deactivate algae cells by binding to their proteins. The active component activates in water, but is quickly broken down by biological microbial action, resulting in no bio-accumulation in the aquarium ecosystem in the long run. This enables APT FIX to be a safe and effective inhibitor for various freshwater algae.

The most effective way to avoid new-tank algae problems is to properly cycle the tank before planting and introducing fish.
Inadequate Cycling often results in Diatoms ( brown fuzz on the edges of leaves or thin, brownish spider-web like strands) or Green Water ( which is triggered by excess organic waste). Also, avoid spot-dosing on Mosses, Liverworts (Riccardia and Riccia etc.) and Vallisneria (Tape Grass) as their cell structures are much more similar to algae than other plants and are therefore more susceptible to being affected.

APT Fix contains 3% Epoxy Adelhydes

Create a 5% APT Fix Solution by adding 20 parts water to 1 part APT Fix.
Dip plants in Solution for around 10 seconds, not more. As usual, remember not to let the plants dry out.

APT Fix does not harm healthy fish, shrimp and other livestock within its recommended dosage. Of course, if you keep very sensitive livestock, you should avoid all products that give you any concern.

My aquarium is cloudy and smells bad. Will the UVC clarifier help?

If the cloudiness is due to suspended bacteria or algae, the UVC clarifier will indeed clear the water, provided it is installed as instructed. To help reduce smells, the best solution is the use of activated carbon. It is also advisable to investigate the source of the odor: if it is due to decomposing organic matter make sure to remove it and perform a regular partial water changes.

Does the UVC clarifier prevent algae growth on surfaces within the aquarium?

The UVC clarifier will only neutralize suspended bacteria and algae, and as such will not prevent the growth of most algae on the aquarium glass, gravel, décor, etc. Some surface-dwelling algae species exist as spores at some life stages, however: the UVC clarifier will help prevent the growth of these species.

Will using the UVC clarifier harm the beneficial bacteria in my aquarium?

The beneficial species of heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria in an aquarium live on surfaces in the filter, in the substrate, on plants, etc. They do not live in the water column and as such are entirely unnaffected by UVC sterilization.

Will the UVC clarifier have any negative effects on the beneficial microorganisms in my reef aquarium?

The UVC clarifier may affect some beneficial microorganisms present in the water column, including ones that may be a food source for some species of fish and coral. In healthy reef aquariums, however, these microorganisms are very abundant and the UVC clarifier won’t significantly affect their population levels.

Will the UVC clarifier help keep my fish from getting sick?

The UVC clarifier helps to keep aquariums clean and healthy, but it is not a treatment for sick fish. Always consult your local aquatics retailer for assistance in preventing or treating aquarium fish diseases.

My fish have ich, will the UVC clarifier cure them?

In general, parasites are too large to be effectively terminated by UVC light. To treat ich, we recommend consulting your local aquatics retailer for assistance.

I am treating my fish with medication. Should I continue to run the UVC clarifier while doing so?

In order to ensure the most effective treatment, the UVC clarifier should be unplugged while medicating fish.

How do I know the UVC clarifier is working?

The 24-hour timer features an operating status light. If it’s green, the UVC bulb is functioning normally. If it’s red, the bulb has expired and the UVC clarifier must be replaced.

How long should I run the UVC clarifier for?

We recommend first running the UVC clarifier intermittently, for 4 hours a day. If the desired effects are not achieved, gradually increase the amount of time the unit runs each day until they are.

How will the UVC clarifier work following a power interruption?

The UVC clarifier will revert to the same operating time that was initially selected once it is reconnected to a power source. For example, if the timer was set to operate for 4 hours a day, it will continue to operate for 4 hours from the moment power is re-established. As the timer does not keep track of the time of day, if you want the UVC unit to run for 4 hours a day as of 8 am, for example, the unit should be connected to a power source at 8 am.

What size hosing does the UVC clarifier accept?

The UVC clarifier connects in-line to all canister filter hosing with an internal diameter of 5/8″ (or 16 mm), such as the Fluval 07 series.

Does the UVC clarifier need to be mounted with the mounting screws or can it hang in-line with the hosing?

We strongly recommend mounting the UVC clarifier with the two mounting screws provided. The unit should be mounted vertically, with the hose connections at the top and the mounting screws at the bottom.
