Origin:
This variety is selectively bred hybrid strain derived from wild discus of the Amazon River basin. The Calico Discus has been developed through targeted breeding to display irregular patches and splashes of multiple colors — red, orange, gold, blue, and white — creating a unique “calico” mosaic pattern. Each fish has a distinct look, making this variety especially attractive to collectors.

Size:
Adult Calico Discus typically grow to about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in diameter.

Temperament:

• Peaceful and social fish
• Prefers to be kept in groups of 5 or more
• Sensitive to stress and water quality fluctuations; thrives in calm, stable environments

Care Requirements:

• Water temperature: 82°F to 86°F (28°C to 30°C)
• pH: 6.0 to 7.0
• Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard
• Requires regular water changes and good filtration to maintain excellent water quality

Diet:
Omnivorous — feeds on high-quality flakes, pellets, and beef heart preparations.

Special Notes:

• Their calico pattern is unpredictable; no two fish look the same, which increases their appeal as a centerpiece fish.
• Stress or suboptimal conditions can cause fading or dullness in coloration, while good diet and lighting bring out vivid contrasts.
• A planted aquarium with a darker substrate highlights their patchwork colors beautifully, making them stand out in display tanks.
