FAQs:

My aquarium is cloudy. Will the FX UVC Clarifier help?

If the cloudiness is due to suspended bacteria or algae, the FX UVC Clarifier will indeed clear the water, provided it is installed as instructed. If the cloudiness is caused by fine particulate matter suspended in the water column, the use of fine filter media such as Fluval Quick-Clear is recommended.

My aquarium smells bad. Will the FX UVC Clarifier help?

To help reduce smells, the best solution is the use of activated carbon. We recommend investigating the source of the odor: if it is due to decomposing organic matter, make sure to remove it and perform regular partial water changes.

Should the FX UVC Clarifier be used in conjunction with a particular filter media?

For best results – particularly in the case of cloudy water – using fine filter media, such as Fluval Quick-Clear, in conjunction with the FX UVC Clarifier is recommended.

Does the FX UVC Clarifier prevent algae growth on surfaces within the aquarium?

In addition to neutralizing suspended algae, independent laboratory research has indicated that the FX UVC Clarifier can help partially inhibit the growth of algae on surfaces in the aquarium.

Will using the FX UVC Clarifier harm the beneficial bacteria in my aquarium?

The beneficial species of bacteria in an aquarium live on surfaces in the filter, in the substrate, on plants, etc. They do not live in the water column and as such are entirely unaffected by UVC sterilization.

Will the FX UVC Clarifier have any negative effects on the beneficial microorganisms in my reef aquarium?

The FX UVC Clarifier may affect some beneficial microorganisms present in the water column, including ones that may be a food source for some species of fish and coral. In healthy reef aquariums, however, these microorganisms are very abundant and the FX UVC Clarifier won’t significantly affect their population levels.

Will the FX UVC Clarifier help keep my fish from getting sick?

The FX UVC Clarifier helps to keep aquariums clear and healthy, but it is not a treatment for sick fish. Always consult your local aquatics retailer for assistance in preventing or treating aquarium fish diseases.

My fish have ich, will the FX UVC Clarifier cure them?

In general, parasites are too large to be effectively terminated by UVC light. To treat ich, we recommend consulting your local aquatics retailer for assistance.

How do I know the FX UVC Clarifier is working?

The indicator light (purple glow) on the side of the FX UVC Clarifier confirms when the unit is operational.

How long should I run the FX UVC Clarifier for?

We recommend first running the FX UVC Clarifier intermittently, while the aquarium lights are on. If the desired effects are not achieved, gradually increase the amount of time the unit runs each day until they are.

What size hosing does the FX UVC Clarifier accept?

The FX UVC Clarifier connects in-line to canister filter hosing with an internal diameter of 1″ / 25 mm, such as the Fluval FX Series. If the included hose adapters are used, any canister filter with 5/8″ / 16 mm hosing can be connected, such as the Fluval 07 Series.

Is there a particular orientation the FX UVC Clarifier should be mounted?

The FX UVC Clarifier can be mounted either horizontally or vertically.

What is the preferred installation method for the FX UVC Clarifier?

The FX UVC Clarifier can be installed either directly to the output of your FX Series canister filter by means of the 90° rubber elbow adapter, or to the cabinet wall with the universal cabinet wall mount bracket and screws. Note that an additional length of FX ribbed hosing (Item #A20233) is necessary for the latter installation method.

My filter stopped operating for a few hours but the FX UVC Clarifier was still plugged in and working. Is it safe to continue using the unit or does it need to be replaced?

The unit is safe to continue using.

Can I replace the bulb inside the FX UVC Clarifier once it burns out?

Yes! A replacement bulb (Item #A19990) is sold separately.

I accidentally dropped my FX UVC Clarifier. What do I do?

We recommend opening the unit to verify the integrity of the CCFL bulb and the quartz tube. If the bulb is broken, a replacement bulb (Item #A19990) must be purchased. If the quartz tube is damaged, the unit as a whole must be replaced. If there is any doubt, cease use of the FX UVC Clarifier immediately and contact our customer support team via our website for assistance.

What makes a CCFL bulb better than traditional fluorescent bulbs?

A Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light (CCFL) runs cooler than a traditional fluorescent bulb. As such, it lasts significantly longer and helps prevent limescale from developing on the quartz tube.

Most other UVC Clarifiers have higher-wattage bulbs in them. Is 6W enough to effectively clear my aquarium?

It is! Independent laboratory testing has demonstrated that the FX UVC Clarifier effectively clears cloudy and green water in aquariums up to 400 US Gal / 1500 L.

Is the FX UVC Clarifier safe to use with planted aquariums?

Yes, the FX UVC Clarifier is safe to use with planted aquariums, and can even help improve plant health by preventing the growth of cyanobacteria that would otherwise smother and kill them.

What is the optimal flow rate to use with the FX UVC Clarifier?

The FX UVC Clarifier’s performance will depend on flow rate, contact time, and aquarium volume. Independent laboratory testing has proven the unit to be effective in aquariums up to 400 US Gal / 1500 L with a maximum circulation rate of 563 US GPH / 2130 LPH. If your aquarium falls within these parameters, the FX UVC Clarifier will eliminate suspended algae as well as cloudy water caused by suspended bacterial blooms.

Is the FX UVC Clarifier only compatible with FX Series canister filters?

No! While the FX UVC Clarifier is compatible with FX Series canister filters and any other filters with 1″ / 25 mm hosing, the included hose adapters also allow it to function with canister filters with 5/8″ / 16 mm hosing, including the 07 Series.

Should the FX UVC Clarifier be mounted on the intake or the output of my canister filter?

The FX UVC Clarifier should be mounted on the output of your canister filter. If mounted on the intake, particles and debris in the water may shield algae and bacteria from the UVC light. On the output side, the water is free of particles and debris, and as such algae and bacteria are eliminated with the greatest efficiency.

I’ve added medication to my fish tank. Should I turn off my FX UVC Clarifier?

It is recommended to turn off your FX UVC Clarifier while medicating your fish, as UVC light has been shown to reduce the efficiency of medication in some cases.
