Origin:
The L333 King Tiger Pleco is a wild-type Hypancistrus species native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil, a tributary of the Amazon River. It is prized for its bold black-and-yellow white striping, which resembles a tiger pattern. Unlike selectively bred ornamental strains, L333 retains its natural riverine lineage, making it highly sought after by pleco enthusiasts and collectors.
Size:
Adult L333 King Tiger Plecos typically grow to about 4 to 5.5 inches (10 to 14 cm) in length.
Temperament:
- Peaceful but territorial toward other plecos
- Best kept singly or in carefully managed groups with hiding spaces
- Compatible with calm community fish. Makes it an ideal choice for Discus!
- Mostly nocturnal and shy during daylight hours
Care Requirements:
- Water temperature: 79°F to 86°F (26°C to 30°C)
- pH: 6.0 to 7.5
- Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Requires regular water changes and good filtration to maintain excellent water quality
- Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and rock structures for hiding
Diet:
Primarily carnivorous — feeds on sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other protein-rich foods. Unlike many plecos, it does not rely heavily on algae and requires a protein-based diet.
Special Notes:
- The L333 is admired for its high-contrast tiger striping, which can vary in thickness and pattern from fish to fish.
- Patterns may intensify under proper diet and optimal water conditions.
- Requires multiple caves if keeping more than one, as males can be territorial.
- A dark substrate and dim lighting enhance its striking stripe contrast.
